Will the coming festive season be lucky for Salman & Karina’s ‘Bodyguard’?

Salman & Kareena in Bodyguard

Bodyguard is an upcoming Hindi romantic action film directed by Siddique. The third remake of the director’s own 2010 Malayalam film, Bodyguard, the film is being produced by Atul Agnihotri and features Salman Khan and Kareena Kapoor in the lead roles. It also stars Raj Babbar, Mahesh Manjrekar and Hazel Keech in supporting roles. Bodyguard is scheduled for release on August 31, 2011. The film’s first look and theatrical trailer was unveiled on 21 July 2011.

Not only Salman Khan, but the entire industry, along with the trade analysts and distributors, has eyes glued on to the upcoming Eid and Ganpati weekend to see if Sallu can manage to maintain his lucky Eid streak. After two back-to-back hits that released on the holy-day(Wanted and Dabanng) Sallu is expecting another big BO win with Bodyguard. Even though he brushes aside the buzz about him becoming synonymous with Eid, he says that he is more excited about the “Hindu-Muslim revelry” this time around.

On the other hand, it’s well-known that Shahrukh Khan prefers the Diwali season. Kuch Kuch Hota Hai, Kal Ho Na Ho, Veer Zara and Om Shanti Om, which released during that time, went on to become huge hits. This time too he has timed his home production RA.One for Diwali — October 26. And Aamir has his fixation for the Christmas weekend— his biggest hits in the last four years have released at that time: Tare Zameen Par, Ghajini and 3 Idiots.

But Vidya Balan will be the first female actor to aim for a previously lucky date. Her film Kahaani directed by Sujoy Ghosh is slated to come out Jan 6, 2012, the first weekend of the new year. No One Killed Jessica hit the screens on the first weekend of 2010 and was a success.

Reception

Upon release, the album received mixed reviews from critics. Joginder Tuteja from Bollywood Hungama gave it 4 out of 5 stars, concluding: “The music of Bodyguard has in it to be hugely popular amongst audience as it has everything for everybody. For the lovers of conventional music there is ‘Desi Beats’ while for Salman’s fans there is the title track ‘Bodyguard’. And then for those who are hunting for melody which boasts of a much longer shelf life, there is ‘Teri Meri’ and ‘I Love You’ (by Pritam) which are all set to rule the charts in days to come.” On the other hand, Rediff.com gave it 2 stars and wrote: “Box office possibilities aside, the soundtrack is not write-off material but nothing to write home too with only awful, average and alright on its menu.” Similarly, Ruchika Kher of theIndo-Asian News Service also gave the album 2 stars and noted: “On the whole, the album is quite average. Though none of the songs is very bad, there isn’t any that really stands out and grabs attention.”
